The Tidings: A Family of Equals on Perlita Avenue PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 10 October 2011 16:18

October 7, 2011, Cristo Rey Church, Los Angeles, California - Perlita is Spanish for “little pearl.” And that is exactly what is found along Perlita Avenue in Atwater Village — a small gem in Cristo Rey Church, the pride of the neighborhood for seven decades.

Small and inviting, Cristo Rey Church is always packed for Mass.

The 350-seat church was built by parishioners with their own hands at the height of WWII when materials were difficult to find. One parishioner, Teodoro Estrada guarded the lumber by sleeping with his dog in his car so no one would steal it. That love and devotion continues today, as evidenced in the way the pastor, Augustinian Recollect Father Galo Espinoza, and members of the Guadalupanos meticulously clean the church together — mopping the floors, dusting the statues and caring for their parish.

Simple and Solemn Profession at Tagaste Monastery PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 20 September 2011 02:52

The weather forecast was not very promising that day, August 27, 2011. The hurricane Irene was making its way to the north along the East coast, and was expected to reach New York that Saturday afternoon. But in spite of the gloomy anticipation for the arrival of the hurricane outside, inside Tagaste Monastery, the friars were enthusiastically preparing for the Simple Profession of Fra. Jose Arredondo and the Solemn Profession of Fra. Jorge Mateos. Within the celebration of the Mass, which started at 10:30 AM and officiated by Rev. Fr. Joseph Gallardo, O.A.R. (Prior Provincial), Fra. Jose and Fra. Jorge both professed the religious vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in the presence their Augustinian Recollect brothers, classmates, professors, SAR members, AR sisters, Guild members and friends. The seminarians of the Adorno Fathers awed the congregation with their beautiful voices during the Mass. After the Mass, there was a light lunch at the Guild Hall to continue the celebration. It may have been a tense and rainy day in New York because of the approaching hurricane, but inside Tagaste Monastery, it was a “sunny” day as Fra. Jorge and Fra. Jose freely and joyfully gave their future to God and to the Order of Augustinian Recollects.
