Cristo Rey Parish PDF Print E-mail

An overhaul has been going on for some time at Cristo Rey. One after another, various projects of repair and replacement were undertaken beginning in late 2010 and are still in process. Beginning with termite control in both church and rectory, new roofing in the church, rectory and parish, were followed by up-grading the electrical and plumbing systems. Upon completion of infra-structure repairs, attention was given to the exterior with the painting of the buildings. The final touch was the asphalting of the two parking lots.

The drive for material up-dating has been supported by the parish which has also seen a considerable growth of the religious education program of the parish. Emphasis has been given to preparation for the sacraments. There are 77 young adults in a two-year program of preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation and 28 adults enrolled in RCIA. An interesting “sign of the times” is the fact that these are English-speaking, a fact noticed by the Regional Bishop.

Ministry at St. Benedict Parish includes availability for civic services requested by government agencies. Fr. McGuire was recently called upon to provide the invocation prayer for a meeting of the First District of the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. He was prepped beforehand concerning the non-denominational character of public prayers. He performed the service to the satisfaction of the five member Board who unanimously expressed their approval by awarding him a certificate of appreciation which states, “The County has been honored by your presence and your prayer on this occasion”.

St. Benedict meets its goal! A goal of $58, 608.20 had been set for the parish for the annual Archdiocesan “Together in Mission” campaign. The purpose of the campaign, established 19 years ago by Cardinal Mahony, is to provide assistance for those churches and schools in the financially disadvantaged areas of the Archdiocese, some 35 parishes and 53 schools. Based upon results to date, Fr. McGuire could report that the fund drive has been a “resounding success”. There have been 645 pledges totaling $98,542.25 of which $31,110.25 has already been collected. Excess monies collected in these campaigns are returned to the parish.

Coming into a Megapolis like Mexico City can be a little intimidating, especially when is your 2nd visit to that city and you don’t know it at all and then taking a taxi that pronounces it doesn’t know the part of the city your are telling him to take you to.  But I made it anyways, (good thing we asked for directions, and having a cell phone in hand is worth millions when you most needed it).  It was all well worth it, because I was able to attend the ordination of one of our brothers to the priesthood.  Under the watchful eye of our Lady of Lourdes Fray Juan Jose Alfaro, was ordained in Mexico City at Our Lady of Lourdes’s parish on July 31st at 1:00PM.  It was a wonderful celebration officiated by the Most Reverend Bishop Carlos Briseno, OAR, Auxiliary Bishop of Mexico City and one of our own.

On September 17 Monsignor Mario Alberto Molina Palma takes his position as archbishop of Los Altos – Quetzaltenango in Guatemala. The former professor and dean of the Faculty of Theology of the University Rafael Landivar has been the bishop of Quiché since the year 2004. Quiché belongs to the archdiocese of Los Altos. He is the first Augustinian Recollect to have this distinction of archbishop in the modern times. In our interview, as he talked of his episcopate the bishop opened to us his heart of a pastor.

Mgr Molina, in the parish of San Juan Cotzal, the last May 31

Monsignor, you are a Panamenian by birth and blood, are you comfortable with your assignment as bishop of Guatemala?
To me being bishop in Guatemala, and this, regardless of my being a Panameñan by origin, was a call to extend a new service to this Church. This, I think, is fruit of the 19 years of dedication and service to the Church in Guatemala before my new assignment. Those were years of committed service and total dedication of the best of myself. I was hoping that the Gospel and Jesus Christ would find
